"Life at the White House is like being in a PRISON

    Dolley Madison then and now

Carol McKinney made a life-changing visit to the First Ladies' Museum in Canton, Ohio.  There she purchased the book, Love, Lust, and Longing in the White House:  The Romantic Relationships of America's Presidents.  Dozens of books on Presidential wives later, she has selected several of the most fascinating, often little-known, First Ladies to portray.

Carol speaks extemporaneously - by ZOOM or in person - costumed as her First Lady, so no "conversation" is ever the same, and she encourages questions as her dialogues progress.

She also lectures on "The Founding Mothers"and "White House Stories" to colleges, libraries, historic societies, alumni groups, school assemblies, service organizations, retirement communities, museums and historic sites.

"I just finished emailing the State AAUW President about the "Duchess" program and raved about how wonderful it was.  I will never forget the many tidbits of information regarding President Harding as well as all the other Ohio-connected First Ladies.  What a lot of research went into this presentation.  It was GREAT!"
- Ginny P., NJ

"Never thought a First Lady could be so fascinating and still timely.  I actually started to believe you were Louisa Adams just chatting with us, and I didn't want you to stop." - Joan B., OH
"Your presentation about Dolley Madison was outstanding.  It was one of the very best presented to the Suburbanites.  I have been a member since the middle sixties, so that is quite an endorsement."
- Ruth M., NJ
EXPLORE THE RE-ENACTIONS
Hello, Dolley - Dolley Madison was the first President’s wife to be referred to as “First Lady.”  Not only is she credited with being the key figure in Madison’s re-election to a second term, but she served as official and unofficial social hostess to Washington D.C. society for more than fifty years and personally knew the first twelve Presidents.

The "Other" Mrs. Adams - Louisa (Mrs. John Quincy) Adams will share her life, one that romance novels are made of:  schooled in a French convent, befriended by the Queen of Austria and Czar Nicholas, separated from her sons for years, faced the loss of multiple children, crossed 1,000 icy miles with only her young son amidst a war-ravaged Russian tundra, staved off Napoleonic troops, and survived a White House experience like no other.

The Duchess Dishes - Florence Harding, known by her husband and the press as "The Duchess" was, herself, a successful business owner and newspaper editor who struggled with a scandalous, lecherous husband.  As such, she will "dish" on her life and that of all the Ohio First Ladies who proceeded her:  Anna AND Caroline Harrison, Julia Grant, Lucy Hayes, Crete Garfield, Ida McKinley, Helen Taft  - all part of presidencies that spanned almost an entire century.

“Discreet” Crete: First Lady Ahead of Her Time -
Although Lucretia Garfield was only First Lady for 200 days, she is remembered as a savvy political partner
to her husband, the 20th U.S. President, James Garfield. Crete was one of the most interesting women to have held that job, and some of her early achievements and choices set the tone for those of her more modern successors.
